It marks both God’s initiative, and your response to His grace.  Whether you’ve never been baptized or you’re seeking to reaffirm your faith, baptism is the step of trusting Jesus and living into the new life He offers.

IS BAPTISM YOUR NEXT STEP?

Water baptism is considered the immediate next step of obedience for those who have trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior. It is an outward public declaration of an internal, spiritual change, symbolizing your commitment to following Him and identification with His death and resurrection.  It also symbolizes:

• New Life: Water baptism symbolizes passing from your old life to a new one in Christ, Romans 6:1-4
• Identification: Following the example of Jesus in Matthew 3, we instantly identify with Him by the submerging in water.
• Next Step: Though not a requirement for salvation, water baptism is designed as the next step to solidify that you belong to Jesus

I've decided to follow Jesus, how can I get baptized?

We are honored that you would consider our house of worship to be baptized.  If you want to get baptized, we would love to talk with you.  Just fill out our form and check the box that says that you are interested in baptism, and we will shortly get back to you about our upcoming baptism class and our baptism schedule.  

If I was baptized or dedicated as a child, can I get baptized as an adult?

Absolutely yes! It can be a powerful step to reaffirm your baptism as an adult. This doesn’t replace your anything done when you were a child; instead it actually supports and affirms the decision your family made years ago.

Am I too old to be baptized?

No one is ever too old to be baptized.  If God is moving in your life and you've decided to follow Jesus, baptism is a testament that you belong to Him. Please fill our form out and let us know so we can get in touch with you about next steps.  

What should I wear?

Anything that can get wet! Oftentimes people wear athletic shorts or swim trunks.  We as that you refrain from wearing light colors that can become transparent when wet.  On the day of your baptism we will have dedicated bathrooms where you can change into your clothes to be baptized.  We will also provide towels so that you can dry up and change back into your dry clothes.

INFANT BAPTISM & INFANT DEDICATION

One of the expressions of Urban Poiema Church is to hold space for both Infant Baptism and Infant Dedication, giving parent(s) the opportunity to choose what they believe is most faithful for their child(ren).  We believe that both divine grace and personal response are essential to the Christian life. Our practice of honoring both Infant Baptism and Infant Dedication is not a contradiction, but a reflection of this deeper theological truth. While infant baptism emphasizes God’s initiating grace, infant dedication highlights the importance of personal faith and decision. Together, they point to the fullness of a life shaped by both God’s action and our response.

The two practices share much in common. In both, families present their children before God in the presence of the community of faith. The church joins in prayer for the child’s spiritual growth, for their eventual experience of salvation, and for God’s ongoing work in their lives. Parents and the congregation alike acknowledge their shared responsibility to raise the child in the faith, committing themselves to nurture the child “in the Lord’s discipline and instruction.” Prayers are also offered for the parents, recognizing the sacred trust given to them in raising their children.

Both practices reflect a hopeful and prayerful expectation that each child will one day personally experience and affirm God’s grace. In both, we recognize that faith is not inherited automatically, but it is cultivated within the context of family, community, and the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit. In this way, both practices rely on God’s help and blessing.

Rather than seeing these practices as competing, we recognize that they each highlight essential truths of the gospel. Infant baptism reminds us that God’s grace comes first. Infant dedication reminds us that each person is called to respond to that grace in faith. For this reason, we entrust this decision to parents, encouraging them to prayerfully discern what is most faithful for their family. In either practice, the heart of the matter remains the same: that every child is deeply loved by God, welcomed into the community of faith, and invited into a lifelong journey of knowing and following Jesus.
